Texture Studies

I had the opportunity to travel to Italy as part of my college curriculum and during the period following that trip, I was working as a scenic artist and was able to create this project to build and develop my skills in scenic texture painting. It was a scenic artist’s dream that I was able to take my own reference photos and build up my library of textures with such aged and weathered materials. While one is referencing the wall from the Valley of the Temples Agrigento, Sicily, the top left is from a wall that I found particularly beautiful as we sat in a parking lot waiting for covid test results before returning home.

These were recreated on 10” x 10” panels using a mixture of leftover joint compound and vermiculite to create three-dimensional texture as well as the implied texture from scenic painting techniques seen on the bottom right panel created with water-based scenic paint.

This collection of four panels was recently featured in the 2023 Student Art Exhibition at George Fox University
